*slap self on back of hand*

I have been a bad, bad blogger.
That is, not posting for the simple reason that I didn't feel like it, which is kind of the point of this whole operation.

Regardless, smile-y things:

  • Waking up to find CHRISTINE across the room :)
  • Hanging out with CHRISTINE for a whole two hours!
  • Making a facebook fan page for the MRWP :)
  • Not getting pied... again... *
  • My math teacher asking me if it was okay if he skipped math class and I had study hall
  • Sitting on the swing in my happy-skirt-sub-two (which acts as a sail of sorts) and reading while the wind pushed me back and forth
  • Reading from the Katie-book :)
  • Hearing David's grad school plans...!!
  • Reading more... and not doing homework.
And tomorrow you ought not to expect to hear from me, again, because I will be out until the wee hours of the morning, doing about the only thing there is to do around here after midnight. ie Rock&Bowl. wheee :)
I promise I am still mostly an optimist, even if I have skipped a lot recently.

*It's actually kind of devious of the teachers... every day since last Thursday I have come to school thinking "this is the day I get Cool Whip in the face" and live in suspense until 6th period when I am informed we are postponing it to the next day. And the next day. And the next day. et cetera. If they do it one more time, I am personally going to THROW AWAY the stupid pies.

no pies! ...yet.

Mrs. B was absent. This meant two good things about today.

1) Megan & Rachel & I got to lead Lit class discussion, and I got to ask about the ducks and the fish of Catcher in the Rye... and some of those sophomores never cease to amaze me! Like... everything I was thinking but better. I am growing to like that book, but Holden still frustrates me to no end.
2) They couldn't pie the seniors again. Too bad. They're going to do it tomorrow. Problem: I am meeting with the hiring manager at Staples directly after school. Looks like that will be a hat sort of day. Silver Lining: IF they choose to pie me. They made it only 3 seniors again, so there is hope!

Bessstttttt :)

AP Lit test > AP Calc test
AP Lit essays > SAT essays
Elizabeth Barrett Browning > most anybody else*

After school was awesome as well. I did my government homework outside, while throwing a ball for Tag. Then I went to the backyard and alternately read my book while swinging, and chased Tag around the backyard-which-has-yet-to-be-mowed in my bare feet.

*thank you, AP Lit test, for exposing me to poetry! would have been nice to study it... sometime... besides that one month at the beginning of this year.

semi-rest

Today after school I came home and took a large step into popular culture-- after much persuasion by trusted friends and fellow bibliophiles, I read the first Harry Potter book. It was actually pretty good. As I was telling Caleb earlier, I don't suppose anyone's diet ought to consist solely of steak and potatoes and broccoli. Sometimes a slice of watermelon or a Rita's ice is in order. This was accomplished quite handily.
Bonus: read it while listening to the Sherlock Holmes soundtrack. EPIC.
So that was good and worth 3 hours of my Friday afternoon. I felt rested.

Then I had the stupid idea to watch a movie with my mom. And not just any movie, but a movie that would make my heart rate go up and my hands sweat more than they ought-- that is, The Boy in the Striped Pajamas. I guess you could chalk said symptoms up to the Mountain Dew I was drinking (caffeine and I don't get along well), but I think it's not improbable that they were because that is simultaneously one of the best and worst movies I have ever seen.
And yes, I did cry. a little.
And yes, I did wimp out and turn off the movie before the end and look up the plot summary on Wikipedia.
I am not that brave.
I am also feeling most definitely less-relaxed than after my first media experience this afternoon.
But I think it's supposed to do that.

C. S. Lewis

I really love him. Mere Christianity and The Great Divorce are just amazing.

I may or may not be posting the next few days. My teachers are being fair, but there are too many of them being fair at the same time. :P
(this is a fancy way of saying: I need to step up my game, and I need to study for a math test for the first time in my LIFE ... ... ... okay, second.)

Also, the choir from England was phenomenal. It was *lots of fun* getting up with Girls' Ensemble for an impromptu performance after that sort of musicianship, in front of said musicians.  GAH. (no, it actually kind of was, because we didn't totally fail, for having 5 minutes to prep)

change

  1. Back from Europe
  2. Back on the internet
  3. Seriously jet-lagged
  4. Sudden distaste for American-Italian food
  5. Officially attending University of Notre Dame next year
  6. Sprained and/or fractured my wrist* when I skipped the 8:30 service this morning to eat and go hiking... karma.
  7. Otherwise, really enjoyed the 6:30 sunrise (c.f. #3) and 10:30 regular Easter services
  8. THIS WEATHER <3
  9. Is it not frustrating yet wonderful when someone much cleverer than you articulates an idea you already had but in a more beautiful way? (see: C. S. Lewis, Mere Christianity, "Time and Beyond Time")
  10. Must have lists of 10. So here are some pictures. (click to see larger)

*It was actually really funny. I was doing just fine... in my ankle-length skirt and flats, along nice little ledges of mud approximately the width of my foot... until we got to a wide flat easy part. I stepped over a log, onto some leaves, and fell completely flat on my side/face/leg in less than a second. I'm pretty sure it was the least graceful thing I could have done, and, to top it off, afterwards one wrist bone was (is) pointed about 15 degrees from where it ought to be. As I said... KARMA.

sledding with friends

1) Went to the library and got lots of materials for my thesis... WHICH IS TAKING FORM (slowly, but it's getting there).

2) Almost convinced my mom to paint the bathroom purple... again, getting there.

3) Wend sledding with friends :) Blake, Colin, Daniel, David, Mark... and Christine, of course. Vicariously.
I didn't sled much, because the trails were a little steep for the excessive foliage covering them (and when I did try it was inevitably a FAIL), but I had fun taking pictures and walking around.

PS- I am going to take MRWP with me to Europe and have the Pope sign it. Wouldn't you like that, Christine?

Lord of the Rings...

IS COMPLETE. la!

I mean, it's been completely written for more than half a century, but I finished reading it today :)

It was very good. I found very few parts I could have done without, or that I found unnecessary or unhelpful. This is high praise :P

Also, had a lot of fun taking pictures today. But I cannot say what they are for or show you any, because they are surprises. WHEE!

inanity + hermitude

two of my favorite words :P

first, inanity (this is addictive)

second, hermitude (NO, HE HASN'T DIED YET. who is "he" anyhow and why are you trying to make this difficult for me?!)

le finis. + et al.

finished and REALLY turned in college apps, this time.
working through LotR. very good stuff.
played Scrabble with David and didn't lose (although, we didn't exactly finish the game).
played Boggle with David & the family and lost horrendously.

I still like Boggle. even though I rarely win. and by rarely I mean practically-never.

bookish

Today I wrote.
And today I read.
And today I FINISHED Native Son (loathsome thing).
And today I continued the Lord of the Rings trilogy, which is not half so inane as certain acquaintances of mine would make it out to be.

And it was marvelous. Why cannot Christmas break be just a little bit longer?

blliuergauwelriGUWLE

(that was the sound of me being eaten by the physics monster)

The Good: I heart Wednesdays. And we talked in Lit about The Raven, and I kind of hijacked the class by asking all of them another question, but it was a really good question, and it just happened to include a quote by (*swoon*) C.S. Lewis that I-just-happened-to-remember while reading Poe's essay on how he wrote The Raven.

The Bad: [see Physics monster that is eating me alive]

The Random: "That was going to be my dramatic exit... but I forgot to ask you where we had choir." (-me :P)

THR3E

soooo good. AUGH! I want to keep reading it! :P

However, I am almost finised Narrative of the Life of Fredrick Douglass!

I find the acronyms of my school books funny. There was aHotAP, and now there is NotLoFD (pronounce: "a hot AP" and "not luffed"/"not loved" hehe)

Three Days

Dear. Me.

8.20.10
I had a pretty fabulous night if I do say so myself. There were a gajillion people at swing dance, so… Christine! I danced enough for BOTH of us! :D
...and, I resisted the aerials! :P

Then Megan slept over, and even though we had to get up at 4 we didn’t turn the lights out until 12:15ish.

8.21.10
On vacation with my sister. (and my mom and dad and Megan, but they don’t cause quite as much uproar and/or entertainment)

Yeah, so, we left the house at 5! AM! Yay!

Then I slept for a long time. Then we stopped at some rest place in North Carolina, and I saw Brooke! It was absolutely crazy. We were going into Starbucks and she was coming out :P

Aaaaand I finished my section of the History of the American People monstrosity! At, like, 3pm. Because they had a book on tape going and I could not pay attention to the book. Because, while the book on tape was not terribly terribly engaging (it’s Lynn Austin, and I don’t care for her writing so much), it was more so than aHotAP.

The best part of the day, however, was Cookout. It is an amazing, drive-through restaurant. But you don’t go there for the food; ohhh no. For the same price as my ridiculously loaded-with-ice 12 oz lemonade at Starbucks, you get a 20 oz, super-filling, absolutely amazing “fancy milkshake” in one of about 40 flavors.

I got strawberry cheesecake :)
(which, by the way, was voted best-choice-in-car).

Now we’re here. And by here I mean a place at the beach in South Carolina. And by South Carolina I mean that muggy-hot, prone-to-tropical-storms, wonderfully-pretty place on the east coast of the United States. It’s great.

8.22.10
Watched Princess Bride. First question Kristen asks was when she saw Inigo. She asked, "What is his name?" (lol)

GOT INTERNET FINALLY! Short term, but it made me feel better to clean out the inbox :)

Showdown :)

I really do love Ted Dekker. Even though he only keeps me occupied for 4 hours out of an unexpectedly-empty day (read: out of the house from 7am-8:30pm with no school reading and NO work assignments).

PS- le SHOCK!
(views-per-day on my other (Wordpress) blog, where I posted this morning... about feminism, lol)

books.music.love.

Book club today! I love my Princess & Miss Amazingness :)
and we always have fun.

Then Megan & I went to school while her mom did uniform stuff. And The Sword & the Pen sounds really good (at least, as well as it can when a non-pianist is playing it). And Eet does not really sound good at all, but it is still SO FUN. Raindrops is next on the Regina list.

And worship practice was fun, with Kristina & Mark. And then when Mark would match pitch with Kristina and me... in our octave... *shakes head*

And I like getting all my music theory :)

eeeeeEEEEEEeeeee!!

Linleigh came to visit us at work today! I love Linleigh.

...and today she brought us caramel macchiatos from Starbucks ;)
and then I got slightly more excited to read A History of the American People than I normally am. But it really isn't that bad... seriously. What other history textbook has a line like "...the House of Burgesses (or whatever they were called)?"

Act Your Shoe Size Day!

I started this last July... third Wednesday in July, yes :)

It's a good time. I wear a 7.5 or 8, so yesterday was going to be awesome.

I started out the day waking up at 8. It felt good. Any time 8-9 is the perfect time to wake up in the summer.
Then Mark came over with footage & stills for the Sunday School volunteer recruitment video. That was not something I would have bothered with when I was 8.
Then I decided to get serious. I took my book, my water bottle, and my two Oreo cookies in a bag up to my reading tree. It is the reading tree because it has good spots for sitting and reading and eating Oreos. It has been my favorite tree since I moved here almost 13 years ago.
After about 5 minutes, I realized that there were ants crawling all over me. Another 5 minutes in, I realized that there were lots of other, more vicious bugs crawling all over me. Not long after that, I realized why I always had so many bug bites when I was 8.
So I did what any self-respecting third-grader would do and ran into the house where there was air conditioning and no bugs.
THEN I did a bunch of 16-year-old-stuff like Facebook and email and video editing and book club.
Then I read. Like, a lot. That's about all I did when I was that age. Reading, reading, reading, all the time, even while eating. Speaking of eating, I went to the grocery store with my mom like I used to, and then got Rita's like I always have when I have a sore throat...
Speaking of which, I was sick yesterday, so I also did stuff I did when I was 8 and sick, like complaining.
Then I went to bed at 9, which I actually think is 30 minutes past what my bedtime used to be. My bedtime was 9 when I was 12, let alone 7.5.

the end.
