  1. Back from Europe
  2. Back on the internet
  3. Seriously jet-lagged
  4. Sudden distaste for American-Italian food
  5. Officially attending University of Notre Dame next year
  6. Sprained and/or fractured my wrist* when I skipped the 8:30 service this morning to eat and go hiking... karma.
  7. Otherwise, really enjoyed the 6:30 sunrise (c.f. #3) and 10:30 regular Easter services

  9. Is it not frustrating yet wonderful when someone much cleverer than you articulates an idea you already had but in a more beautiful way? (see: C. S. Lewis, Mere Christianity, "Time and Beyond Time")

*It was actually really funny. I was doing just fine... in my ankle-length skirt and flats, along nice little ledges of mud approximately the width of my foot... until we got to a wide flat easy part. I stepped over a log, onto some leaves, and fell completely flat on my side/face/leg in less than a second. I'm pretty sure it was the least graceful thing I could have done, and, to top it off, afterwards one wrist bone was (is) pointed about 15 degrees from where it ought to be. As I said... KARMA.

[insert heart symbol that is HTML-incorrect here]

Yesterday
-The Awkward Feely Conversation, during which Rachel and I both tripped over things because it was so Awkward and about Feelings
-"Rachel... the lawn gnome trucker!!!"
-Watched Titanic, finally. I enjoyed it thoroughly; it was a work of art. The motif of the hands is brilliant.
-Sleepover with Megan!

Today
-Saw Caleb a bunch for the first time in a while :)
-Began working on part of Christine's halfway present... yes, there will be one. muahaha. ha. ha.
-Learned tandem Charleston. The lead part. Partially. Ish. But it was fun. :)
-"Don't drool on me!" (my sister cracks me up)
-Dancing.
-Dancing in my sparkly outfit.
-Dancing lots of times and only hitting Mark in the face once :P
-Did I mention dancing?
-DADDY IS HOME!!!!<3

traipsing through a winter wonderland

My fairy place takes on a whole new nature (NOT A PUN, I just can't think of another word) under the snow. I love it. I almost fell into the water a few times. It was just warm enough that it kept flowing, even under the 10-18 inches of snow covering it.

Note the bamboo. Still green. And not a dusty blue-green like most evergreens... a really intense green. You can't see it very well in this picture.

Sundays are awesome

I love, love, love the feeling of "I finished all of my homework and housework yesterday and now I can do WHATEVER I want to with my Sunday."

Including spontaneous plans to make trips to obscure state parks in northern Harford County. That's fun.

Note: I am not as bad a videographer as some of the shots would indicate. I just had to use some... uh... creative cropping. Let's just say that graffiti is rarely clean.
Also Note: I tried really hard to find a good song that was the right length to put this video to. The next closest thing I could find was Sugar Plum Fairy music, and I know how Princess feels about the misuse of THAT. :P So suffer through some Veggie Tales, it'll be okay.

Christmas Eve, and what Christmas is all about

Today, I...
-finished Christmas shopping
-continued Christmas making
-began Christmas wrapping
-sang O Holy Night for Christmas Eve service... after a week of laryngitis/cold... and didn't fall on my face!
-saw David's haircut and almost fell on my face :P
-talked to Christine! briefly, but whatever.

MERRY CHRISTMAS ALL!

more music stuff.

No school today, so... much-needed extended choir practice! and then more singing, and practicing O Holy Night (and that stupid high note... I AM NOT A SOPRANO!), and then Daniel's recital. I thoroughly enjoyed that.

My impressions, in order:
The Haydn Sonata- I could tell right away that this guy was a perfectionist. I mean, the piece itself does not lend so much to emotion or meaning per se, but more of the technical accuracy and precision. When he messed up a little at the end, marring this perfection, the whole enjoyment of the piece was lost to him.
The Fantastic Dances, Op. 5- Loved these. Kristina told me an interesting thing about them... that they were written during the Communist Regime and were semi-censored, except that Shostakovich stuck "acceptable" stuff at the end. How do you censor music with no words?
Gnossienne No. 1- Daniel's piece! I enjoyed the contrast between this and the first... while Daniel's hands weren't jumping like hyper bugs so much and doing so many technically impressive things, it was clear that the purpose of the song was the subtleties and emotions.
Ophelia's Song- Vocalists from here out. She was definitely a full lyric or dramatic soprano... sopranos tend to turn flat, and she didn't pull the runs with enough lightness or agility to be a coloratura or light lyric.
Ich Liebe Dich- She was even flatter, and it was kind of an awkward performance. She had her right hand in the air and her left hand by her side, fiddling with her fingers at a very fast pace. The entire time.

annddd then there were a lot more I don't feel like summarizing... or, all of them, at least... I'll go by name.

Kyrstin- She was the best to listen to. Nice timbre and color in her voice. HOWEVER, she forced her vibrato (like Charlotte Church... wiggle-chin, much?).
Adam- So very fun. He did all songs from musicals... very comedic. He's a tenor. He ended each of his three songs on big, dramatic, high pitches with well-controlled, tight vibrato. And a tomato face.
Alyssa- The program says she is a soprano, but she did not show it off in her song selection. They were actually kind of... nondescript.
Victoria- Meh. She had some serious breath control issues. She appeared to be very, very nervous.
Conor- When I saw he chose songs by Ben Folds and Jason Mraz, I could picture him... shoulder-length-ish hair and a preppy-grunge sweater with a smaller voice. I was right. He had his left hand in his pocket with the thumb sticking out (which is a major indicator of confidence, as opposed to the thumb in the pocket and all others out, which indicates discomfort), and the other fiddling frenetically with the hem on his right pocket.
Genevieve- She held her harmony nicely? Didn't sing much.

I Learned...
I have a high G in my range and it sounds decent... hallelujah and finally.

LA!

The Good: Everything!

The Bad: Not really anything!

The Random: I spend a whole lot of time thinking about those things which might be bad, you know? And, sure, they might be bad on other days, but today was really decent and I spent a lot of it worrying about other stuff on other days. When, really, that stuff fits perfectly well into my worry-quotient of those days... no need to overflow it into today.

This is the day that the Lord has made. Let us rejoice and be glad in it. WHOO!

Do Hard Things... !

Okay. Hi. This is Christine & Kathryne/Katie. We are going to blog our day. EEEEEP!!! !!! !!! !!!

5:30 AM- "My Savior" by Aaron Shust playing way too loud in our sleepy ears
6:15 AM- Leave for DO HARD THINGS!!!!!!!!11!!!!1!!
7:00 AM- Katie reluctantly begins Government homework because the sun is now out.
8:00 AM- DO HARD THINGS AHHHHAETOIUHVEOSIYHBS
8:20 AM- Motivational Red Wall Paint makes the shoutout board!
9:00 AM- Pure awesome.
5:00 PM- Fangirl time :) Brett Harris signed the MRWP. Then Joel Harris signed it, and he got to sign it next to Robin Mark so he took a picture :) THENTHENTHEN Shannon Harris, Josh's wife, who happens to sing for Sovereign Grace music including The Precious Blood, signed it too.
6:00 PM- Wendy's for dinner! sitting outside, and then this random old man came up to us and talked to us about Mennonite clothing and asked us if we were Mennonites and rambled some odd thing about modern women's clothing... o.0
7:15 PM- Leave for home. Katie attempts to do more Government. Snakes in the car. hehe.
9:05 PM- We both do homework. And talk. And Christine thinks she distracts Katie. But really Katie is just as distracting. Katie gets hungry.
10:00 PM- Sign on to Blogger.

OH. different Good/Bad/Random order today... we're really shaking things up here.

The Bad: No mime performance tomorrow. Major miscommunication. And so that's a bummer.

The Good: (see above, and in addition-) We get to sleep in. Relatively. Like, 7:30 instead of 5:30. But it's still nice. And we still get to see all of our favorite people (read: mimes) at church tomorrow.

The Random:
Good morning starshine, the earth says hello!

I am happy.

OH! I forgot!

The Good: (see: above) (and see: Princess' amazing poem!)

The Bad: (see: 6am, twice in a row)

The Random: I painted the MRWP with white-out so that it is a sign-able surface for ohmygoodness Alex/Brett/Josh Harris, to whom I will hopefully be gifted with the ability to present their first ever opportunity to sign a 2oz jar of Benjamin Moore Poppy Red wall paint.

UmmmyesIlovemylife.

...because JESUS is Life :D

(how cheesy is that, and yet how true?)

seriously. I have been so incredibly effervescent since last night... maybe even since before that... I think it was since I put on my gypsy shirt in the afternoon, yes?

either way...

today planned fun things and made fun things and FINISHED THE MIDDLEMARCH ESSAY and had a bad hair day and didn't really care.

!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Christine & Erin came over today to hang with me & Kristen. Went to Joanne's and did fabulous, secretive things. And played with Photobooth. And stuff.

Then we went to THE MOST AWESOME WORSHIP/CONCERT EVER. Robin Mark, btw. I'd had the thing on my calendar since January, and it CAME!!!

So, I met the guy afterwards. He is less intimidating in person than on stage. But he is also very kind. I forgot my CD at home and had nothing signable in my purse. At a stroke of genius, I asked Colin if he still had the Motivational Red Wall Paint.

Can you guess what I did?

I'll take that as a "maybe."

I asked Robin to sign it. He wrote a message on the rim of the lid, and signed his name on the top, side, and bottom. Oh, he's so very cool. Kristina asked him, "have you ever been asked to sign wall paint before?" He said, "no, this is a first." LOL

Guess which one I am! hint: Anticonformity will eat your soulllllllll!!!!!

No words :)

I have no. words. legitly.

Today was cool, and I talked with awesome people like Sandy and Livi and Daniel. And that's all cool and yadayadayada.

But then... tonight.
at the evening service.
God, what a world You love.
it's amazing what He has done.
what He's doing.
what vision and drive and wisdom He puts in people like Matt.
and what wonderful voices of reason He puts in the minds of people like me who start thinking they can do everything and change the world... when all we are is tools in His hands. And for people like me that may not mean becoming a teacher. But the fields are white. The harvest is ready. And all we've got to do is bend a little and sharpen up so we can be His machetes. And it is SO INCREDIBLY AWESOME.

Kathryne

PS- welcome home, Christine & Andee! Love you guys! Send me long emails about the weekend, but don't spoil stuff because I'm going in October :P

Today is Wednesday, right?

This vacation has been super crazy awesome. I feel like we've been here a week and it's only been 3.5 days.

Today we went to Slide Rock state park. My cousins all jumped off of the 40 foot cliff. I abstained. I climbed rocks instead. I feel greater friendship with solid earth than with water. Or heights.

In other news... exactly 3 weeks from today will be Act Your Shoe Size Day!! This is the great day of the year where you have an excuse to act like a little kid again... unless, of course, you wear a size 13, in which case I pity you. I hated being thirteen.

I wear a 7.5, so I get to do all kinds of fun things and I am psyched :)

mimmmeeeesss!!!

I love mimes, I really do. This has nothing to do with the list in progress (50 Reasons I Should not be a Mime).

The concert was *amazing* and lovely and in all ways wonderful. I love you guys.

Also, I DID NOT GET LARYNGITIS! even though I was leading 2 choirs today in school, and delivering my Hamlet soliloquy, and playing piano, and singing a solo... I survived! yay!

ALSO, I moved my Awesome Possum blog to Wordpress! It is so cool.

happy places :)

there are some places that just make me smile. they make me so inexplicably happy.

I went to a place like that today... the kind of place you can go with 10 other people and feel... not isolated, but... just free, like if you snapped your fingers, everybody else would just evaporate. the perfect sort of thing for an ambivert :P
(just kidding. I am an introvert. I just like people.)

(and then I made myself another clover crown.)

AND I drove! and didn't die! AND I saw Aaron & Matt on the side of the road at their carwash :P pleasant surprise.
