Today is Wednesday, right?

This vacation has been super crazy awesome. I feel like we've been here a week and it's only been 3.5 days.

Today we went to Slide Rock state park. My cousins all jumped off of the 40 foot cliff. I abstained. I climbed rocks instead. I feel greater friendship with solid earth than with water. Or heights.

In other news... exactly 3 weeks from today will be Act Your Shoe Size Day!! This is the great day of the year where you have an excuse to act like a little kid again... unless, of course, you wear a size 13, in which case I pity you. I hated being thirteen.

I wear a 7.5, so I get to do all kinds of fun things and I am psyched :)

EPIC, for real.

Seriously, this place is amazing.
lots of pictures coming.

If there were a word to describe hiking & white-water-rafting the Grand Canyon, "epic" would be it.
But... dear me, am I ever exhausted.

PS- I <3 desert squirrels!

woah.

Alright. Well, I am currently in Williams, AZ... eaten, slept, showered, and with the biggest purple circles under my eyes I have EVER seen.

I finally got to bed 22 hours after I woke up. However, I think the food-jet-lag is worse than the sleep-jet-lag. I ate, like, 3 lunches yesterday.

The internet here is horrible (took me 15 minutes just to load the email page, and I didn't even want to attempt blogger), so I may not be posting until we transport to Sedona. Unless the internet in the lobby is better than in the room.

SOOO, smiley things from my 22-hour day... well, everything we did made me think of Africa. Including the 105-degree weather when we landed.

105 degrees + wind - (any sort)(humidity) = 47 hairdryers blowing in your face

Off to the Grand Canyon today :) With the cousins and the grandparents :)

perfect night :)

Tonight I saw Christine and talked about everything. I love you!
Then I got to dance a wee bit of lindy hop with David. Yay! It makes me want to learn more. Later.
Then I saw Sandy! *fish face*

Then we finished packing for the Grand Canyon... yup, tomorrow at 4:45 AM I am leaving for an 18-hour transit from BWI to Chicago to LAX (no, Miley Cyrus, I shall not be wearing cowboy boots nor shall I be listening to Jay-Z) back to Sedona, AZ. There I shall meet up with my cousins and (other) grandparents and begin our adventure :)

As for now... the air smells like cotton candy snowballs, and the moon looks like a giant ball of aged parmesan hanging in the sky. The iHome is playing "What a Wonderful World" (string quartet version), and I concur wholeheartedly. Life is awesome. I could not wish for anything more (except maybe the ability to not sleep... Sandy, I'm going to be Ursula to your Ariel and steal your soul!)

Goodnight and goodbye!*

*I may find internet access throughout the week.

Talked about Oscar... real teenagers... why real teenagers would not talk about Oscar ;)... modesty... leadership... gender roles... and other things. I love you guys!

ALSO! laptop is now fully functional!

PS- Jane is an INFJ, for the record.

many yays :)

Well. I suppose I could go through my week and talk about things that made me smile each day, but I am far too impatient for that.

Basically:
my grandparents took Kristen & me (& Oscar) on a cruise to Bermuda.
It was gorgeous.

I read Jane Eyre and I totally called 2/4 plot twists.
I read The Bride Collector and there is no calling Ted Dekker.
I am reading The Silmarillion and it is beyond words.
I am then going to read something by John Grisham and then Portrait of a Lady.
I love summer.
My goal is to read two "classics" (aka good literature written before 1950 with 250+ pages) every 3 weeks. Not including my candy reads (see: Ted Dekker, John Grisham, Tim Downs, etc). Sound reasonable? That would mean I'd get nearly 10 really good books in, this summer. LOVE! (unfortunately, this would include 5 assigned reads like Narrative of the Life of Fredrick Douglass... SIGH!)

Quote of the day:
Kristen: I had this dream about the mimes last night...
Katie: WOAH, me too; how weird.
Kristen: We must be telepathetic!!!*

*pun intended

PS- I am getting a laptop! Oh joy, joy, joy!!! It's a Powerbook G4... the predecessor to the MacBook Pro.

Firsts and Lasts...

Well. Today I did/made/had my first:
  • sushi? sushimi?
  • Pork bun... thing
  • experience playing (and losing) Super Smash... something... on Wii
  • cheap oil pastel (aka unsharpened crayon) drawing... thing
  • random stranger say I was hot?
*SIDETRACK*
That was really funny.
Picture this:
I am at my library, walking out of the Reading List section with such wonderful things as Jane Eyre, Alice's Adventures in Wonderland and Through the Looking Glass, and The Silmarillion.
This random guy (he looked to be about 15) looked up from his computer and says, "hi."
A young boy with him, probably his brother who would be 7 or 8, says, "Well, that was random."
I am about 8 or 9 yards away when I hear, "She's hot!"
The younger boy, obviously mortified and much more sensible, urgently says something under his breath.
His brother responds in a whisper, still loud and clear, "Yeah, I did say that pretty loud... I wonder if she heard me."
I roll my eyes at this point, but since I have turned the corner into another row of books they cannot see me.

And now for lasts:
  • that was my last time EVER eating those red bean paste things... I'm sorry Sandy, it tasted like styrofoam.
  • this is my last post for a week... I'm off on vacation with my grandparents :)

mimmmeeeesss!!!

I love mimes, I really do. This has nothing to do with the list in progress (50 Reasons I Should not be a Mime).

The concert was *amazing* and lovely and in all ways wonderful. I love you guys.

Also, I DID NOT GET LARYNGITIS! even though I was leading 2 choirs today in school, and delivering my Hamlet soliloquy, and playing piano, and singing a solo... I survived! yay!

ALSO, I moved my Awesome Possum blog to Wordpress! It is so cool.

new things

SO. guess who has a blog now?

...yep. PRINCESS! :D

so that made me happy.

ALSO. finals are over! my class DVD is finished! and all I have left now is a speech on my thesis, and I will be done working for the rest of the year :)
my week has been amazing. all days should be half days. I can work on stuff (like Sandy's ever-expanding present... muahaha) and eat whatever and I have a HUGE pillow of time I haven't had all year. This is amazing.

food and things

I went to Panera with Amy today :) we had a French Toast bagel. it was surprisingly yummy! we didn't feel like paying more than twice the price of the bagel to get it with cream cheese, so we had butter.

then we went to Marshalls. I got an awesome purple shirt.

BUT. the smiliest thing of all... hehe... muahaha... Sandy's birthday present... it is epic. And I do not use that word lightly. It is about 40% complete. muahaha.

Oscumentary!

'Tis finished! :D

ALSOOOO!!!!!!

OHMY!!!!
Rachel = amazingness. Princess, you are now christened: "Gagaddess." (get it? Lady Gaga... goddess... ha... ha...)

Seriously, though, the ballet was amazing. I feel a sudden desire to intensify my quest for culture.

As of now I have been to a Shakespeare play, an amateur Shakespeare play, a concert, a mime concert, a Broadway musical, and a ballet.
I have sewn a dress, performed songs in Welsh and English, and painted a poinsettia on a tin.
I have learned Latin and swing dancing.
I have read the epics and the Russian greats, and I've written a 20-page paper.
Now I just need to go see an orchestra and an opera, and maybe an Oscar Wilde play, and my cultured-ness will have covered its bases.
Oh, and I need to learn to waltz. And continue teaching myself the piano. THEN it will have covered its bases, and I can build on everything.

Kathryne

EDIT: I have also been to the National Gallery of Art twice, the National Portrait Gallery once, and the Walter's Art Museum like 50 zillion times.

now tonight I am going to clean my room and update my journal on the past, uh, semester really... I really do procrastinate.

but... YAY! tomorrow!!!! :D

Kathryne

EDIT: I decided to brainwash myself by doing Calc homework and watching a Disney Channel movie at the same time (come in from both sides of the "intelligence/concentration required" spectrum :P). Ergo, I shall not journal but rather go to bed early!

happy things!

So, there's this thing going around Facebook...

"If you like this status I will post on your wall something I like about you. Make this your status if you'd like a challenge :)"

(originally the smiley was going the WRONG WAY. oh, that bugs me!!! but I changed it.)

Sandy thought (reasonably) that one of us OI people started it, but I am sad to say I did not. Idk about anybody else.
It's an amazing way to challenge yourself to think positively not only about circumstances but also people.
AND... oh, Sandy, you made me smile OUT LOUD.

One thing I like to do, as a private, modified Optimism Initiative, is to take a person I don't like all so much (no names) and write something positive about them every day for 2 weeks. I have never actually carried this through all the way on paper, but I'm about there...

best Facebook event EVER.

Ohmy. My cousin joined this group/event, and when I saw it on my wall I almost laughed out loud... then almost cried, because it's so marvelous.

Do it!!!!

Andee: be forewarned. I will get you, my pretty, and your little brother too! (just kidding. unless I find it fun to correct him.)
Andee: be extra forewarned, because I feel like picking on you.

Switzerland
the Mongols
and the Black Death.

In the same essay.

For extra credit.

It is awesome.

Also, worked out an arrangement What Wondrous Love is This with the AWESOME music director at the church that hosts my school. We get to use handbells!
